Ganesh Chaturthi falls annually in the sixth month of Hindu calendar, Bhadrapada, which generally falls in August or September. This year, the festival will be celebrated on Saturday, August 22.
Ganesh Chaturthi is a celebration which holds a lot of significance for devotees. Worshippers bring home an idol of Lord Ganesha every year, welcoming him as their guest and worship him for ten days, after which, he is bid goodbye, which is known as Visarjan. Special pujas and aartis are organized on all ten days. Huge statues of the deity are also installed in public spaces to mark the festival. Special offerings and delicacies such as modak, which is considered to be Lord Ganesha's favourites are prepared during the festival. Homes are decorated, people visit each other and offer their blessings. However, this year, the pandemic has muted down the festivity, which otherwise, always happens in a grand manner.
While we are all focussed on safeguarding our health, it is important that we abide by the rules and celebrate the festival differently. Ganesh Chaturthi: Rituals
On this auspicious day, people usually get up early in the morning and take a bath so that they can proceed toward the temple to offer their prayers to Lord Ganesha.
Various artistic clay models of Lord Ganesha, varying in sizes and poses, are prepared by the artisans. These statues are installed in decorated pandals in homes, temples and mandaps. Flowers and lights enhances the beauty of statues installed.
When the rituals begin, the priest chants mantras to invoke life into the idol. Since this festival calls for celebrations, there is loud music on the streets with people dancing to religious songs. The entire ambience turns lively with trendy music, drum beats, and dances of devotees. There are lights, colours, fireworks and much more to add to the festive spirit. The devotees take the idol through the streets, thus singing, dancing and shouting 'Ganapati Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi Laukariya' which means that the Lord should come back next year.
Few devotees celebrate this festival at home. Family and friends are invited to attend the pooja at home. Recipes like Modak, Pooran Poli, and Sundal are prepared for friends and family.
